Family Origins:
John WANN was born about 1765 and died in Co Armagh 1828.
His wife was Eleanor DEMPSEY ( c1780 - 1860).
There is a headstone at Church of Ireland Parish Church , Mullaghbrack
in Co Armagh, erected to the memory of John Wann, his wife Eleanor and
children and also to the memory of John’s son William Wann JP,
his wife Margaret and children. I would think that this entire memorial
was erected by one of the children of William Wann JP, probably by his
son James Christopher Wann.

Records show that John Wann was the Earl of Gosford’s steward
on the Earl’s Market Hill estate around 1820.
It is believed that John WANN or his forebears may have come from Scotland.
Certainly the name WANN is known in Scotland and it is reported that
an old Mrs WANN of Belfast, Northern Ireland said that her husband had
told her that the WANNs came from Scotland. Other research states that
“the earliest known member of the Wann family was born in Perth,
Scotland ”.
The Earl of Gosford (Sir Archibald ACHESON) on whose estate John Wann
worked, had come to Northern Ireland about 1604 from Gosford, Haddington
Shire near Edinburgh, Scotland.
No connection between WANNs in Ireland and WANNs in Scotland in this
early period has been proven.
